JobsNOW: Sew a little or a lot? There’s a job for you

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The internet is buzzing with new ways to thread a needle. But how many people are sewing? It’s an art that is fading, but if you have the skill, there are plenty of job opportunities.

The bride in her dress is always the star of a wedding, but behind the scenes, a seamstress plays an important role. When 27 WKBN First News visited Ruth DiVencenzo, she was making fit improvements to the bride’s dress for an upcoming destination wedding.

“The best compliment you could have is, ‘I don’t think you did this,’ and then they go try it on. And then they see that it fits them absolutely perfect,” DiVincenzo said.

A good fit is important, whether it’s for a wedding, prom, homecoming or other special event. Alterations Express has three locations across the Valley. All of them are hiring seamstresses or tailors. DiVencenzo and Debbie McNees have 30 years of experience. The job could be a good fit with vast or limited sewing experience.

“Someone that’s made something at home maybe from a pattern or has a little bit of home sewing knowledge,” McNees said

“Basically, being able to know how to sew a little bit if they’re going to get into the harder stuff. If they’re just going to get into like hems and regular sewing, we can train them — that’s not hard,” DiVincenzo said.

The position includes pay and uncapped commissions. The workspace can be colorful. The job can be full or part-time.

“Make them smile, be happy with what they bought, what they’ve chosen, and make their night special,” McNees said.
