BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – A customer shopping at a local grocery store reported finding a card skimming device at one of the registers.

The manager of the store called police around 6:30 p.m. Monday to report the incident, handing over a black plastic keypad cover that was found attached to the credit card processing terminal. A police report redacted the name of the store, but the address was listed at 4121 South Ave.

According to the police report, a customer was using the device when the top cover came loose. The cashier then realized it was a card-skimming device.

According to the FBI , skimming occurs when devices are illegally installed at ATMs, point-of-sale terminals or fuel pumps, and these devices can record a cardholder’s PIN entries. Thieves can then use them to create fake payment cards and make unauthorized purchases or steal from victims’ accounts.

The police report indicates that the store had received no reports from customers about credit card misuse. The register where the device was found was shut down for the day.

An employee told police that the store requires daily checks of credit card terminals after reports that skimming devices had been found at other local retailers. If the terminals had been checked as required, that would mean that the person who placed the device did so that day, the report stated.

Police were waiting for a review of surveillance video from the store, and the incident remains under investigation.
