The Essence of Divine Love: Understanding God through Science, Prophets and Teachers

Being human, we seek to understand God as an entity and our place in the universe; much of this seeking for understanding falls upon single figures, like Jesus Christ. Throughout history, there have been many great teachers and prophets beaming the very essence of divine love onto humanity. This essay contends that God is that ultimate force of love which has been manifested not only by Jesus but by other influential figures throughout these traditions.

God is love, incomprehensible to human understanding.

Pure love is misconceived as a human emotion; whereas, Love in an absolute sense is much more than that. From our microscopic view, it becomes an all inclusive force, far surpassing the human experience: It is God, it is the Universal Energy that binds everything together. How much of divine love our finite brains can fathom is very limited, but the realization that it is the very core of existence puts us in line with a larger reality.

Jesus Christ: The Epitome of Divine Love

The life and teaching of Jesus Christ manifest this Divine Love. Not to found a new religion, did his message come but to reveal how man could live in harmony with that eternal force. Jesus showed by his compassion, understanding, and sacrifice that love is the great commandment and ultimate truth of existence. At the moment of his cry on the Cross, his humanity is also shown what is the deep link between divine love and the human experience.

    Other Great Teachers and Seers

There have been other great souls throughout history who captured the same feelings of love and compassion. For example:

Buddha Siddhartha Gautama is the absolute founder of Buddhism, showing a route to enlightenment in the way of practicing compassion by observing the world and not becoming attached to anything. Much of his philosophy attempts to justify this notion of divine love, emphasizing the necessity of love and compassion toward all living beings.

For Prophet Muhammad of Islam, mercy, compassion, and justice have been his teachings in a nutshell. Indeed, the view expressed by the concept of rahmah, or the mercy from God, in Islam is very much alike to the kind that puts forward a similar view of love, which can be taken as fundamental to our comprehension of God.

Confucius: In Confucianism, Confucius preached benevolence, respect, and love in all relationships. His teachings themselves show ways of leading a life that is plain and decent, full of integrity and compassion, which come under the universal principles of divine love.

Hindu Saints and Gurus: Be it Krishna, Rama, and various saints in Hinduism, they have spoken at one point or another about this nature of love. Much of it focuses on the unconditional nature of love and the need to lead a life of pure devotion and compassion.

    The Divine Intelligence in Creation

It is probably through findings on DNA that science has unraveled the complex design in life. This had to amount to something: an underlying intelligence to which this blueprint was. It is a Divine blueprint whose notion fits very well with the conception of God as an intelligent force of love. Not only does this point of view firmly close the gap that generally exists between science and spirituality but also gives a better meaning to the intelligence behind creation as a reflection of Divine Love.

Living in Divine Love: A Call to Action

If God is love, then our purpose must be living pictures of that love, enacted both in actions and relationships. Jesus' teaching, as well as that of other prophets, calls us to just this work: to love one another, forgive, live in unity. History is a record of different misrepresentations and distortions, but astoundingly, the central message is pretty clear: to live according to divine love is to find our deepest purpose.

    Conclusion

It is through great teachers and prophets that the truth of God as pure, eternal love has been taught down through the ages. In accepting this understanding, man identifies with the deepest reality of his existence and furthers the coming into being of a world where love and compassion are to reign supreme. May we pay homage to these diverse figures of wisdom and live in harmony with this eternal energy that sustains all things.
