A 40-year-old Broward County man was arrested this week on charges related to a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in April in suburban Boca Raton.

Carlos Cardoso is facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash and tampering with evidence in a crash on April 6 that killed 65-year-old Martin Albert Barry. Investigators say Cardoso, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, drove his 2011 GMC Acadia SUV to a garage near his parents' home in Port St. Lucie in an effort to conceal it.

Cardoso was taken into custody on Wednesday, June 26, and appeared for a court hearing at the Palm Beach County Jail the following day. County Judge Ori Silver set Cardoso's bail at $65,000 and ordered that he be placed on in-house arrest upon his release. He remained in custody as of Friday morning, June 28, jail records showed. A message left for Cardoso's attorney Friday morning was not immediately returned.

According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrest report, at about 4 a.m. on the day in question, Cardoso struck Barry as Barry was walking in the area of State Road 7 and Sandalfoot Rood. Barry was taken to Delray Medical Center where he was pronounced dead about the two hours after the crash.

The preliminary investigation showed that Cardoso was driving south on State Road 7 as Barry was using the crosswalk. A witness told deputies that Cardoso appeared to be speeding and ran a red light when he crashed into Barry.

Cardoso did not stop and attempt to render aid, investigators said. Debris recovered from the crash scene indicated that an older model GMC SUV was involved. License plate readers showed an undamaged GM approaching the area moments before the crash and the same vehicle with damage after the crash, the sheriff's office said.

After multiple attempts by deputies to locate Cardoso and the vehicle, an attorney representing Cardoso contacted sheriff's investigators and provided them with the SUV's location. Port St. Lucie police located the vehicle in the parking lot of a gym and secured it until Palm Beach County deputies arrived.
