The search for a missing girl came to a tragic end Sunday afternoon in Boiling Springs.

The child, whose name had not been released as of Sunday afternoon, went missing in the waters of the Broad River Greenway on Saturday, and a search and rescue mission ensued.

The search continued Sunday and came to a solemn end when her body was recovered.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young girl during this incredibly difficult time," Kim Duren, executive director of the Broad River Greenway said in a social media post. "The loss of a young life is always profoundly tragic, and our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating event."

    The post continued:

“Ms. Duren asks that in the wake of this tragic occurrence, community members prioritize safety and exercise caution when engaging in recreational activities near water bodies.

The collective efforts of emergency responders, volunteers, and community members involved in the search and recovery operation are deeply appreciated. Their unwavering dedication and commitment throughout this challenging incident have been commendable.

We ask for privacy for this family as they navigate through this difficult period of mourning and grief.”

During the search, the Greenway was closed.

Duren said Sunday morning that the incident happened on the south side of the river across N.C. 150 near the bridge where there is a boat launch.

Duren said in addition to the search and rescue team, Cleveland County Emergency Management was on site, the Broad River ranger, Boiling Springs Police and Cleveland County Sheriff's Office.

"It truly is sad we are once again talking about a horrible, horrible day for a family," she said.

The Broad River Greenway has been the site of multiple drownings over the years.

In 2021, Omar Saverda Pina from Charlotte , drowned while swimming with his family. In 2019, Keenan Little walked into the water and drowned and in 2011, 14-year-old Nathan Beck was crossing the river with friends on foot and was swept under and drowned.
