BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — The Broad River Greenway is temporarily closed after a young girl drowned, greenway officials confirmed on Sunday.

Rescue teams were at the greenway around 6:15 on Saturday, June 8, conducting a search and rescue operation. After talking with the family, officials deployed boats and swimmers into the water to look for the girl.

The search continued until it got dark Saturday night and started again around 8 a.m. Sunday morning, Boiling Springs Fire & Rescue said. The search ended around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday when the young girl’s body was found.

Boiling Springs Police Chief Nathan Phillips confirmed the girl was 10 years old.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young girl during this incredibly difficult time,” Kim Duren, Executive Director of the Broad River Greenway, said. “The loss of a young life is always profoundly tragic, and our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating event.”

In the wake of this tragic event, officials want to remind everyone to prioritize safety and caution when planning activities near bodies of water. “It never hurts to be too safe,” Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Whisnant said.

It is unclear how the girl drowned or when the greenway will reopen.
