Idaho Home's Bizarre Bathroom Layout Has Everyone So Puzzled

In terms of layout, bathrooms are among the most straightforward home spaces you can have. All you really need is a toilet, sink, and shower and/or tub (and obviously stuff like light fixtures and towel racks, but I'm just talking the bare-bones basics). As long as you have all those components and they're well-installed, it's hard to get a bathroom "wrong."

But the more spacious a bathroom gets, the more room the home designer has to play with the layout, and sometimes that ends in with things getting weird. Take this bizarre bathroom in a Boise home, which left one Idaho realtor and her followers scratching their heads!

I'm just as confused as @idahorealtoraimee . Like, what was the thought process here? That alcove would have been the perfect place for a toilet- why waste all that empty space just to stick the toilet right next to the shower? I did wonder if that alcove was meant for a stackable washer and dryer , but there are no fixtures to hook them up to. The plot thickens...

Possible Reasons for This Odd Bathroom

This one was a headscratcher, one that left Realtor Aimee's followers just as confused- and amused- as her.

"I bet it's because they remodeled the bathroom and made a small bathroom bigger and didn't want the expense of moving the toilet," guessed @unicronrainbowsparkles (a theory a lot of people shared).

"The cubby isn't wide enough for code, they should have moved the sink over, I'll assume no plans were drawn," critiqued @derping_dave.

Here's where things get weirder. Many of Aimee's followers speculated that the home may have been renovated for a tenant with disabilities, as the alcove wouldn't have been wheelchair-accessible. That explanation would make this unusual layout a bit more sensible- were this actually the result of a renovation.

"It's not for this home," Aimee clarified under one of these comments, debunking this theory. "This is a floorplan in the neighborhood where they are like this."

Uh... what? If every house in the neighborhood has bathrooms like this, then that also completely throws every " renovation gone wrong " theory out the window. And hypothetically, if all these homes were designed with ADA compliance in mind (which isn't common practice in private housing ), then the designers didn't do a very good job of it. For example, several commenters pointed out that there's no empty space directly under the sink, making it inaccessible to wheelchair users. The tub also doesn't appear to have any accessibility accommodations. We're back to the drawing board on this one!

Making the Most of a Weird Layout

Whatever the reason behind this unlikely layout, residents of this peculiar Boise neighborhood will have to make the most of their weird bathrooms - unless they wanna put money down on a costly renovation project . So, what to do with a space like this?

"It's weird but you could put shelves there and make a cute storage section . You could make it work," said @itskristinm.

"That would make a nice linen closet ," @raisedokie remarked.

"That's where you put the litter box," quipped @danibanani_19. OK, but as a cat parent, I would actually love to have a dedicated litter box alcove!

This bathroom is a headscratcher, and your guess as to what went wrong here is as good as mine. However, the right owner with good organization and decorating skills could make lemonade out of this lemon. It'd be a very unique home design project, that's for sure!
