Boise State lands in-state lineman at key position. He praises program’s ‘values’

The Boise State football team snagged its first in-state commitment from a 2025 prospect this week.

Middleton offensive tackle Dallyn Grimes verbally committed to the Broncos on Monday. He’s a three-star recruit and the No. 4 prospect in Idaho, according to 247Sports . He also has scholarship offers from Idaho, Eastern Washington, Montana and Portland State.

Grimes said Wednesday that he chose Boise State because it’s where he felt most comfortable.

“I felt like the staff there really cared, and it’s somewhere I fit in terms of personality,” Grimes told the Idaho Statesman. “(Spencer) Danielson is a great coach, and I think he can do big things with this program.”

Even though he’s lived in Middleton most of his life, Grimes said he didn’t grow up a Boise State fan. His father is from Eugene, Oregon, and his family followed the University of Oregon. Grimes said that changed for him when the recruiting process began last year.

He also said his entire family will be rooting for the Broncos when they head to Eugene to play the Ducks on Sept. 7.

“I got to see the inner workings of Boise State and their values,” Grimes said. “It means a lot to me to stay close to home and my parents, and to have them come to my games. There are a lot of people here that mean a lot to me, and having that support is going to be big.”

One of the people who meant the most to Grimes during his football career was his older brother, Garrison. He was a three-year starter on Middleton’s offensive line, and the brothers got to start together during Dallyn’s sophomore year. He started at left tackle and Garrison started at right.

Grimes also plans to follow in his brother’s footsteps after graduation. Garrison is currently serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ventura, California. Dallyn plans to go on his own mission after graduating in May, meaning he won’t join the team at Boise State until 2027.

“I always had two dreams since I was a little kid: Serve a mission and play college football,” Grimes said. “I was straightforward with Danielson about it, and he was encouraging and supportive. It doesn’t seem to worry them at all.”

Boise State has a long history of taking players after they’ve served a church mission. Kicker Jonah Dalmas joined the team after serving a two-year mission, and he has a chance to end his college career as one of the most productive kickers in NCAA history . He already owns Boise State’s career record with 80 field goals. He needs to hit four this season to set the Mountain West record and 18 to break the NCAA record.

Grimes is heading into his third season as Middleton’s starter at left tackle. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound lineman joined the Vikings’ varsity team as a sophomore just as it was making the transition from 4A to 5A. He called his first game against Rocky Mountain a “real eye-opener.”

“I got thrown into the deep end, but it was the best scenario for me,” he said, adding that he has grown as a leader the past two years. “This experience has taught me a lot about what it takes to be a good leader. I’ve learned how to lead kids that are older than me and how to kind of be a coach for the younger kids.”

Grimes was named second-team 5A SIC Foothills Division last season and wants to build on that in his final high school season.

“I just want to stay out of my head because I play my best football when I’m playing fast and free,” he said.

Grimes also finished in ninth place as a heavyweight in the 5A District III wrestling tournament last year. He plans to wrestle again his senior season because he said it’s a benefit to his football career.

“Wrestling is probably the best sport you can do to help with football,” he said. “The work ethic alone that you learn is invaluable.”

Grimes is the 10th known player, but first offensive lineman, to commit to Boise State’s 2025 recruiting class.
