Looking back: This week in eastern Idaho history
100 years agoNews out of Whitehall, Mont., this week in 1924 reveals that the man suspected of killing a Bonneville County sheriff’s deputy had been apprehended. But wait — there’s more. Lawmen in Montana had placed in custody a man and woman camped on Pipestone Creek, just south of Whitehall city limits, on suspicion that the man might have been the suspect at large, W.C. Wilson, wanted in connection with the June 2 shooting of Deputy Neil Simpkins, who had come with a warrant charging him with bootlegging. “The man and the woman were placed in the city jail until the arrival of the deputy from Boulder,” the Helena Daily Independent reported. “He gave his name as Bud Campbell and the woman as Pearl Johnson. When (Deputy Sheriff) Williams arrived the pair were questioned and their belongings searched, and it was determined that they were not the ones wanted for murder. However, the officer was not satisfied to release them until he had definite word from the Idaho sheriff. Early Sunday morning, an answer was received by Mr. Williams in response to the one sent early Saturday night, and stated that Wilson was in custody, but to hold Campbell and the woman, as the former was wanted for wife desertion and white slavery at Blackfoot, Idaho.” The two were taken to the county seat, “Both are still in the county Bastille awaiting the arrival of the sheriff from Blackfoot,” the Independent reported.
