As usual, this fall season is packed. I’ve already highlighted a few book club-friendly books by acclaimed writers that are bound to be big this fall, and since there are so many books coming out, I’ve left the ones mentioned in that list out of September’s best book club books. Just so you’re kept up to speed, though, Sally Rooney’s Intermezzo is coming out on the 24th, as is Olga Tokarczuk’s The Empusium. And We Solve Murders by Richard Osman, whose mysteries have been mega-popular, is out on the 17th.

September is here! This starts my favorite time of year. Growing up, this time of year meant football season, hay rides, and back to school supplies. Now, I still love fall. There’s cold apple cider, pumpkin smoothies, and corn mazes. This week, I’m sharing two of some recent favorite nonfiction reads over the last few years. But first, let’s jump into bookish goods.

This week’s roundup of bestselling books is shorter than usual, because the bestseller lists could not agree. Some of the top sellers according to one list don’t appear at all on others. Kamala Harris’s memoir The Truths We Hold is #1 on the Indie Bestseller (Paperback Nonfiction) bestseller list, but doesn’t appear in the top ten of any of the others. The only thing everyone can agree on is that Colleen Hoover and Sarah J. Maas books continue to sell.

As summer comes to an end, it’s an important time of renewal. In addition to the start of a new academic school year, it’s the end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the start of all the trees shedding their leaves in preparation to grow again. The beginning of the school year was always exciting to me due in no small part to the acquisition of paper products and stationary. I loved a set of freshly sharpened pencils, a clean planner, and college-ruled notebooks. I also enjoyed arguing about my notebook and folder color-coding system with my friends. Math notebooks were always light blue—I refused to budge on that. As an adult, it’s just as fun to plan the beginning of your fall with bookish planners.

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Ask a hundred people what it means for a book to be spicy, and you’ll probably get a hundred different definitions. The concept of spicy books carries a “you know it when you see it” vibe, but people’s individual reading preferences are so personal, specific, and varied that it’s not actually helpful. When “spicy” can mean anything, it comes to mean nothing. I’ve been hoping a romance expert would address the increasing uselessness of spicy discourse, and the folks at Shelf Love have more than delivered with a look at the ways in which it flattens conversation, fails readers, and misrepresents the romance genre. I’m not sure what the solution is, since spicy is just one of the many euphemisms born of trying to evade algorithmic censorship, but I’m glad to see us talking about the problem.
