CENTER – On Saturday, July 20, a beautiful benefit lunch was held to help Cora Martinez with her medical and transport costs. Martinez was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma Cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, Medulloblastoma affects children more than it does adults. It causes brain tumors. If caught early, and with appropriate treatment, according to the Cancer Institute, many people can achieve long-term survival.

LaGrees grocery store in Buena Vista will soon offer a new and innovative way for customers to purchase ammunition. According to the manufacturer American Rounds, a state-of-the-art vending machine equipped with double steel walls, ID scanners, and facial recognition technology will be installed at the store by the end of the month. This machine will accept credit card payments in exchange for ammunition.

As housing and renting costs rise, people are getting more and more creative, and there seems to be a draw for many to rural areas. One such area is the San Luis Valley of southeastern Colorado, where after subdivision projects failed, 5 acre plots in the high desert can be purchased for relatively cheap. In May 2017, author Ted Conover bought one of those five acre plots to see what off-grid life looked like firsthand, and lived off that land over the course of four years.
