Memorial service held for fallen former Union firefighter
Firefighters and emergency personnel from across Missouri attended the memorial service for Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Matt Tobben on Saturday at East Central College. Tobben died while responding to a swift water rescue in Columbia on July 8. Tobben had served with the Union Fire Department for 19 years before taking a job with Boone County two months ago. On July 9, a procession of emergency vehicles delivered Tobben's body to his hometown of Union. The Saturday service was coordinated by the Boone County and Union Fire Protection Districts along with the Missouri Fire Service Funeral Assistance Team. Friend of Tobben and Union Fire Captain Joe Straatmann spoke during the memorial service about the memories he had with Tobben and the type of person he was. "He was a man like no other man. His heart and drive was simple. It was to provide for his family and to help others," said Straatmann.

Mike Parson has ordered the U.S. and Missouri flags to be lowered to half-staff at all government buildings in Boone County, the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri in Kingdom City, and firehouses statewide from sunrise to sunset Saturday in honor of Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Matthew Toben.

The Boone County Sheriff's Department shared that one person died after a motorcycle pursuit on July 12.
