Funeral services are set for a Boone County firefighter who drowned while rescuing two people from floodwaters in north Columbia this week. The visitation for Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Matthew Tobben will be held this Friday, July 12, at Oltmann Funeral Home in Union. The visitation will run from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral, with full fire service honors, will be held Saturday, July 13, at 11:00 a.m. at East Central College in Union. The burial will be private.

Man drowns in private pond in Harrisburg
A 32-year-old man is dead after drowning in the 7000 block of W Sweringen Road in Harrisburg. Family members say the man was canoeing with family, and went onto the pond alone in a canoe without a life jacket. They say the man went onto the water without knowing how to swim, and never resurfaced.

Court documents indicate a Columbia shooting suspect jailed without bond for Wednesday’s shooting on Lincoln drive has ties to Little Rock, Arkansas. Boone County prosecutors have charged 18-year-old Jeremiah Johnson with first degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Boone County Circuit Judge Kevin Crane has denied bond for Johnson, who is expected to make his initial court appearance via video Thursday afternoon on either the 1 or 1:30 docket.
