BOONES MILL, Va. ( WFXR )—The Boones Mill Police Department announced it has added a K-9 to the team, Officer Rex.

Officer Rex is a 22-month-old Belgian Malinois that is certified in patrol, tracking, and narcotics. Rex and Police Chief Kelvin Pruett recently completed their training with K9 Working Dogs International at a National K9 Training Center in West Virginia.

Chief Pruett has 18 years of experience as a K-9 handler and says he is excited to add the benefits of a K-9 to the program. After becoming the department’s chief in 2022, he worked on efforts to create the K-9 program.

According to the police department, Officer Rex has already won the hearts of Town staff, other police officers, and will certainly make friends in the community. They are all also excited to see him in action as the department continues to fight against the trafficking, sale, and possession of illegal narcotics in the area.
