GTSB Reminds Drivers No One is a Good Drunk Driver this July 4th Weekend
(Iowa) – As Iowans commemorate Independence Day, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) has one critical message, “No One’s a Good DRUNK Driver.” In 2022, a person lost their life every 39 minutes in alcohol-related crashes on U.S. roads. From July 3 to July 7, law enforcement statewide will heighten vigilance against drunk driving on our roads.

Cover Crop Business Accelerator from PFI and ISA celebrates 5 years
Practical Farmers of Iowa and the Iowa Soybean Association offer their Cover Crop Business Accelerator (CCBA) program to support cover crop adoption in the Midwest. The program is now in its fifth year, and it helps new and emerging cover crop businesses with the seed and application services they need to reach their conservation goals. Ross McCaw, a CCBA participant and farmer from Marengo, talked about why he started his cover crop business.
Second Highest Year for Tornadoes as of July 1
(Des Moines) Brad Small, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, says it has been a remarkable year for Tornadoes. Small tells KSOM/KS95 News that as of July 1, Iowa has up to 108 tornadoes for the calendar year, second only to 120 tornadoes to date, set in 2003. The average number of Tornadoes per year is 50.

Historic front page from the Des Moines Register, Nov. 5, 1917: Merle Hay dies in WWI
The Evening Tribune, the afternoon sister paper of the Des Moines Register, reports on Nov. 5, 1917, that Iowan Merle Hay is among the first U.S. soldiers to be killed in World War I. The 20-year-old farm mechanic and store clerk from Glidden may have been the first to die as German troops mounted an attack on his unit's trench in France. Hay's funeral in Glidden drew mourners from around the country, and in Des Moines, he became the namesake of a major thoroughfare.
DCG Softball at Iowa City West
After having the 4th of July off, Dallas Center – Grimes softball will be back today when they make the trip out east to take on Iowa City West. DCG will be looking for their 30th win of the season while Iowa City West will come into the matchup with a 3-30 record.
ADM Baseball In-Season Statistics
The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Baseball team is continuing to grow throughout the season as a few more games remain until postseason. The Tigers are currently sitting at 14-13 overall (9-7 inside the Raccoon River Conference) and have two more regular season games remaining before the playoffs. Through 27 games, Senior Grant Rychnovsky leads ADM with 26 hits, 21 runs scored, and 20 RBI’s. Junior Grant Jansen is second with 23 hits, and Junior Reed Ausdemore is third. Senior Rhylan Stine-Smith is second on the team with 15 runs scored, and Junior Jaxson Book has 12. Jansen has 15 RBI’s on the year, which is second to Rychnovsky, and Stine-Smith sits in third with nine.

Berkley McClish of Johnston and Owen Siegert of West Marshall are the Des Moines Register Iowa Ortho female and male Athlete of the Week winners for the week of June 24-30. McClish was on point in the circle for the 5A No. 5 Johnston softball team during a 10-0 victory over No. 5 Waukee as part of a doubleheader sweep by the Dragons on June 26 at Johnston. McClish held Waukee to five hits, and she struck out eight batters with no walks in six innings to earn the quality win.
