Each week, NorthJersey.com would like to highlight adoptable animals from local shelters and rescues.

If you foster, work at, or volunteer with a North Jersey animal shelter or rescue and know of some animals who are in need of a loving fur-ever home, please send a photo, description, and adoption information to amwallace@gannett.com to have your adoptable pets featured in the next edition.

This week, we are featuring Scrappie, Sofie and Ash from NorthStar Pet Rescue in Boonton.

    Scrappie and Sofie (bonded pair)

Sofie is a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix and Scrappie is a 13-year-old Cairn terrier mix. They are a bonded pair of dogs who were adopted from North Ocean County Animal facility and were recently returned when their owner was no longer able to care for them. They were taken in by NorthStar and are now in a foster home awaiting a new place to land.

Both dogs are friendly lap dogs who enjoy pets and will seek attention. They love to hang out, especially outside on the deck if the weather is nice. Otherwise, they are couch potatoes. They love being with people and will always nuzzle up to you on the couch or find their way onto your lap.

Scrappie is older than Sofie but is much more playful with lots of pep in his step.

They are both very easy going and good with young kids as well as other dogs and cats. They know basic commands such as sit, come, stay, down, and shake. They are good on leash and would make a great addition to any home.

Scrappie and Sofie will only be adopted into a home together as they have lived together for many years and are dependent on each other. If you are interested in bringing Scrappie and Sofie into your home, fill out an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and ask for them by name, "SCRAPPIE & SOFIE NJ - BONDED PAIR."

    Ash

Ash is a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois mix who is smart and loving. She sits nicely whenever the possibility of a treat comes around and also sits and waits for her meals to be served. She has even taught herself to go to the door when she has to go out. Ash is housebroken, and kennel trained, but prefers a treat or two when entering the kennel.

Quick to bond with her human, Ash is super sweet and affectionate as well as a master cuddler and leaner. She is very curious and will want to follow you everywhere and watch everything you do. However, she does get nervous when meeting new people and tends to be vocal about her fear. She needs a human that will be patient with her and understanding when it comes to visitors and friends.

Once she is warmed up, her personality will shine through. She can run all day or crash just about anywhere when the time comes to wind down. She loves toys and will bring love and energy to anybody willing to adopt her.

After being rescued from a shelter in Texas, NorthStar discovered that Ash has a severe congenital deformity that will lead to congestive heart failure. She is currently on medication for her condition and seeking the care of a cardiologist is recommended. She will need to be monitored for symptoms such as exercise intolerance, shortness of breath and coughing. Unfortunately, Ash's longevity will be affected, and the doctors feel that she will most likely not reach the age of 5 years.

When NorthStar rescued Ash, they never expected that she would have such a short life, but they are determined to make the time she has left the best they can. Ash is looking for a very special adopter who will love this sweet girl and give her the care she needs for the rest of her life. If her story has touched your heart and you would like to give her a loving home, please fill out an application at www.northstarpets.org and be sure to ask for "ASH TX."
