SAN DIEGO ( Border Report ) — Tijuana police officers will set up DUI checkpoints throughout the city this weekend, and in particular Sunday night, as it tries to cut down on drinking and driving during the Mexican Independence holiday.

Fernando Sánchez González, head of Tijuana Public Safety’s Office, told reporters they will have additional patrols in the Zona Río, downtown Tijuana and near the area where the Tijuana Fair is currently going on.

“Whenever there are mass events or gatherings, we know there are problems,” Sánchez González said. “Independence Day crowds bring a lot of people together to celebrate, we’ll be ready with checkpoints as we deploy throughout the city.”

One of the biggest celebrations is expected to take place at city hall in Tijuana with festivities beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday.

“We will have an operation here as well, but we’re certainly not ignoring downtown, Zona Río and other areas of the city.”

According to Sánchez González, specifics and locations will not be made public as a way to safeguard the integrity of the operations.

“We have to keep this a secret, but our main focus is to ensure public safety for all Tijuana residents,” he said. “We’ll also have a big presence during the Independence Day parade on Monday.”
