    Applications for the Russell D. Holt Memorial Scholarship can be submitted starting Monday, July 1, 2024.

    The scholarship was created to provide tuition assistance to students entering the Vocational Nursing Program in Central Texas.

    The scholarship provides an award of $10,000, covering most of the full cost of a one-year Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) training program.

    The eligible recipient must have been accepted to one of the following Texas colleges’ LVN program: Central Texas College, Hill College, McLennan College, Navarro College, Ranger College, Temple College, and Weatherford College.

    Eligible recipient must reside in one of the following Texas counties: Brown, Comanche, Erath, Somervell, Hood, Johnson, Mills, Hamilton, Hill, and Bosque. Special preference will be given to students who have resided in Bosque County.

    Awards are made on the basisofAcademicExcellence, Contributions to Community and Employment/Service projects, Financial Need, Letters of Recommendation and the Essay.

    Inquire with the Student Services or Financial Aid office at the appropriate college.

    The scholarship will be awarded to one individual and disbursed as follows: 1) 40 percent awarded for the Fall session.

    2) 30 percent awarded for the Spring session.

    3) Remaining funds awarded for the Summer session.

    Funds will be paid directly to the appropriate College or Foundation to be used for qualified Student expenses including tuition, fees, and course required materials.

    The deadline to submit applications is Monday, July 15, 2024; the scholarship recipient will be notified of the award by Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

    About Dr. Holt

    Russell D. Holt, M.D. (1910-1959), devoted his life to the practice of medicine, and he was centrally involved in the establishment of vocational nurse training in Texas.

    Dr. Holt was largely responsible for the founding of the Texas League of Vocational Nurses, and he was a principal figure in the passing of the Vocational Nursing licensing law in Texas in 1951.

    At the time of his death in 1959, Dr. Holt was serving on the Texas Hospital Association, and he was chairman of the Committee on Nursing Care of the Private Clinics and Hospital Association of Texas.

    Dr. Holt is buried in the old Meridian Cemetery where a Texas State Historic Marker recognizes his accomplishments.

    The memorial scholarship established in his name is intendedtohonorhismemory and extend his legacy by enabling motivated and worthy individuals to achieve a high-quality training in vocational nursing.
