Bosque County 4-H member Timothy Murphy (from left) received a $3,000 scholarship from the Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo, and Clifton 4-H member Karina Tergerson and Meridian 4-H member Piper Boyd received awards for contests at the Texas 4-H Roundup held in Bryan/College Station June 3-6, 2024.

Three Bosque County 4-H students received recognition at the Texas 4-H Roundup held in Bryan/ College Station, June 3-6.

On Wednesday, June 5, Timothy Murphy, son of Dennis and LeighAnn Murphy, received a $3,000 scholarship from Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo.

On Thursday, June 6, Piper Boyd, daughter of Jill and Rob Boyd, placed third in the Poetry & Prose division of the Talent Showcase. A member of Meridian 4-H, Piper recited an original poem called “My EpiPen” that she and her mother co-wrote several years ago that she uses to teach others the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and how to properly use an EpiPen. She’s very dedicated to educating others about the dangers of food allergies.

A member of Clifton 4-H, Karina Tergerson, daughter of Justin and Tammy Tergerson, placed first for her presentation in the Health & Wellness Educational Presentation Contest titled, 'Teen and Young Adult Anxiety and Depression.' With five of 23 students presenting on a similar topic, one could see that mental health is an important topic for many of these students. Karina presented information defining terms, statistics, how to help others, how to help oneself, and resources available. This is a topic she began researching five years ago to help herself and others.

“The Bosque 4-H program is proud of the following youth for their participation and success at Texas 4-H Roundup,” Chelsea Dorward, Bosque County Extension Agent said.

Community organization members who would like either of the young ladies to give her presentation for a meeting program so the community can learn more about these important topics may reach out to the Bosque County AgriLife Extension Office at (254) 435-2331.

Additionally, each of these students, along with three others from Bosque County 4-H, Emma Bell, Sophia Neumann, and Rebekah Tyler, wrote bills related to areas they are passionate about for the upcoming 4-H Congress next month.

4-H Congress is an opportunity for 4-H students across the state to go through a simulation of writing and passing bills into laws like the Texas State Congress.

Bell, Boyd, Murphy, Neumann, and Tyler will all represent Bosque County and District 8 at the event.

The next Texas 4-H Roundup event is planned for June 2-5, 2025, in Bryan/College Station, Texas.
