A 78-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a car in Wakefield on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The crash happened at 49 Water St. around 2:30 p.m.

Police said the driver of a Mustang CUV struck the victim, who was rushed to a local hospital. His condition was not known Wednesday.

Wakefield and state police spent hours collecting evidence at the scene of this pedestrian crash on Wednesday afternoon.

Patrick O’Hara, who lives nearby, watched the aftermath as he returned home.

“I said, ‘Umm, “Is everybody all right?’” O’Hara said.

A portion of Water Street near Vernon was closed down as investigators spoke to witnesses and gathered video.

A nearby business owner told Boston 25 that his security cameras captured the entire tragic incident. He handed that footage to police.

As the Mustang was towed away, the intersection reopened to traffic early Wednesday evening.

It was unclear Wednesday what led up to the crash, and whether charges will be filed.

The district attorney’s office is now investigating the crash.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
