Police have apprehended a Level 3 sex offender who allegedly approached and then followed a teenage girl out jogging in Marshfield on Tuesday until she ran away, police said.

Edmund D. LaChance, 53, with a last known address of 23 Hawthorne St. in Scituate, was convicted in 2001 of rape and indecent assault and battery on a person aged 14 or older, and also convicted in 1991 of rape, according to the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Database.

LaChance was arrested Thursday by the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section Metro Team, for failing to register with the Sex Offender Registry Board.

Chance was separately wanted for questioning in Tuesday’s incident, when at around 5:45 p.m, a suspicious man driving in the Humarock area of Marshfield reportedly pulled up alongside a 17-year-old teenager who was out jogging and offered her a ride, police said.

When the teen declined and continued jogging, the driver followed her until she ran away and called 911.

Scituate and Marshfield Police identified LaChance as a person of interest in Tuesday’s incident, and police released his photo and also the car registration plate number to the public.

Marshfield Police later found the vehicle and driver, later identified as LaChance, on the Scituate side of Humarock area, police said.

LaChance “has a history of predatory behavior and was convicted of several charges previously, including rape and kidnapping,” state police said in a statement on Thursday.

During the joint investigation with local police, the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section Metro Team learned that LaChance may be in a specific location in Hingham.

Troopers located and arrested him in Hingham, and took him to Hingham District Court for his arraignment.

“We also wish to thank the brave young woman who contacted us to report this,” police said in a social media post on Wednesday.
