Gov. Maura Healey expressed her support for fellow democratic governor Tim Walz as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate on ABC’s “‘Good Morning America” on Wednesday, and used a sports metaphor to illustrate how he would stack up to his vice presidential challenger JD Vance in a debate.

“It’s linebacker vs. waterboy,” Healey said of the vice presidential candidates. “I can’t wait to see Tim Walz take down JD Vance on stage.”

Healey also said she commends Walz’s “career of public service,” including his time in the army and serving as governor of Minnesota, also highlighting his work as a high school football coach.

“He’s clearly tough, he coached linebackers, but he is somebody who is really bringing the joy and that’s what people are seeing,” Healey said. “That’s what’s resonating.”

Although Healey acknowledged that Walz did not have a lot of national name recognition before Harris introduced him at a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Healey called the Harris-Walz duo the “dream ticket.”

“I think a lot of people did not know Tim Walz but he is going to make a great impression,” Healey said. “America’s gonna fall in love with him.”

Healey also made an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday to discuss Walz.

“As a football coach, I bet if you pulled the players who he coached, I don’t know if they’re Democrat, Republican, independent, I don’t know what they are,” Healey said. “But I know they’re voting for Tim Walz.”

Healey — an accomplished high school and college athlete herself — applauded Walz for bringing his football team the state championship.

“You get there by being a coach,” Healey said. “He knows how to psych people up, he knows how to support them.”
