Greater Boston was apparently inundated with swarms of flying ants on Monday

Reports from across the city flooded social media of the bizarre sightings.

Residents of Boston were caught in a mating frenzy of flying ants on Monday night.

On social media, people posted accounts of cars covered in bugs, getting caught in their hair, going up their noses, and getting caught in their dogs’ fur.

Universal Hub first reported on the swarm of ants. People reported the ants in Cambridge, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Hyde Park, West Roxbury and Dedham.

According to meteorologist Dave Epstein, this season’s heat and humidity kicked off the annual mating ritual for the ants, which explains their rambunctious behavior.

In Jamaica Plain, one resident wrote on Reddit that people were being chased back into their homes because you couldn’t walk around without them getting in your mouth and nose.

After the encounter, another resident fled back inside and still found 20 ants on them after a shower.

Another reported that it was “out of control” on Carson Beach in Southie during the sunset.

One person exclaimed, “It’s flying ant day!”

And this wasn’t even the first insect-related frenzy of the summer: The saga recalls July’s great dragonfly invasion in Rhode Island, which swarmed beachgoers in what appeared to be a plague.
