JetBlue customers who purchase the airline’s cheapest fare class can now bring a carry-on bag for free.

As of Friday, all JetBlue customers, including those who buy Blue Basic, are permitted one free carry-on bag in addition to one small personal item. The airline announced the updated policy in June. Previously, customers who wanted to bring a carry-on bag needed to purchase one of JetBlue’s other fare options or buy an Even More Space seat.

“Carry-on bags are an important part of travel to customers, and when presented with a choice between JetBlue’s award-winning service and another carrier’s basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner,” said Marty St. George, president of JetBlue, in a statement. “We’re always looking for ways to evolve our offering in response to customer preferences. This is a win-win as we improve the customer experience and keep JetBlue competitive in our industry.”

Customers may still need to check a carry-on bag at the gate if there are space restrictions (for no additional charge), noted the airline, and fees still apply for oversized or overweight bags. Read more about JetBlue’s baggage policy here.

JetBlue is Logan Airport‘s largest carrier. In July, the airline announced a major New England expansion, adding service to Manchester, N.H., expanding Florida routes, and adding vacation destinations. On Thursday, the airline launched daily service between Boston and northern Maine.
