Patriots center David Andrews and former Patriots QB Brian Hoyer are hosting "The Quick Snap," a weekly show focused on the Patriots.

Brian Hoyer and David Andrews have spent a lot of time on practice fields and in stadiums together – five NFL seasons worth, in fact.

But Hoyer, who spent eight seasons as a quarterback with the Patriots, couldn’t help but marvel listening to Andrews explain in detail on the first episode of their new show, “The Quick Snap,” how the Patriots used to set up pass plays for Julian Edelman by repeatedly using him as a blocker – only to eventually slip him out into a route when defenses weren’t ready for it.

“To hear a center talk about this … that just speaks to your knowledge of offense and what you’ve learned over a 10-year career,” Hoyer told Andrews. “That’s pretty impressive for me to hear you say that.”

There will be a lot more where that came from.

The two old teammates are combining their 25 years of football experience into “The Quick Snap,” a Patriots-focused podcast from Boston.com’s B-Side Sports in partnership with Shadow Lion.

The pair plan to meet once a week during the Patriots season to recap the team’s games, with Andrews of course providing firsthand knowledge of what happens on the field. But the show will also include conversations with guests about sports, life and what makes them tick.

“Patriots fans are the best fans in the world, and this podcast is an opportunity to hopefully enjoy a show with players being open and having conversations like never before,” Andrews told B-Side Sports.

The feeling is mutual for Hoyer, who told B-Side Sports he’s long had a career in media in the back of his mind.

“As quarterbacks, we deal with the media the most,” the 15-year veteran said. “That’s just the reality of playing the position. We have to know the offense, we have to know the defense, we have to know the situations more than any other position on the field.

“I just want to be open and honest and use the knowledge that I’ve accumulated in a 15-year career and try to educate fans.”

But the 38-year-old Hoyer, who’s made several television appearances since becoming a free agent this spring and also worked on preseason Patriots broadcasts, also wanted to do something unique with this latest foray into the football media world.

“Having a guy who’s going through it and then having me, who’s been through it but now is kind of taking that step to the other side, so to speak – I think it just creates a much more, interesting dynamic,” he said. “I think David and I have such a good relationship that that just comes naturally.”

Several pairs of current (Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown) and former (Chris and Kyle Long) players have had success in the podcast world. There are also many former quarterbacks, like ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky and J.T. O’Sullivan of “The QB School,” making names for themselves in the space. But there have been fewer mixes of current and former players in podcasts aside from Jason and Travis Kelce, who started their podcast “New Heights” while both were active players. (Jason retired this past offseason.)

Hoyer and Andrews are also breaking new ground for a New England Patriots organization famously known for its guarded reputation under long-time head coach Bill Belichick.

“Having to deal with the media while Belichick is your coach, you’re always figuring out ways to speak your message clearly while not trying to give everything away,” Hoyer said. “Now it’s been fun to be on the other side and really give your message the way you want to.”

Andrews’ inclusion during the season, Hoyer added, was a testament to a “more open, more candid” approach to media under new head coach Jerod Mayo.

Though the duo’s conversations certainly didn’t give away any trade secrets about the Patriots’ playbook, they do aim to take listeners “behind the scenes” of both the game of football, including some of the differences between new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt’s offensive philosophy and the Patriots’ long-standing system, and the life of NFL players more broadly.

You’ll hear the odd story about Patriots legends like Dante Scarnecchia, who famously once chewed Andrews out in front of his wife at practice, and Tom Brady himself. (Apparently, even he forgot a play every once in a while.)

Plus, you can bet there will be some conversation – especially on Hoyer’s end – about the Patriots’ handling of starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who will also be a guest on the show, and this year’s No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye. (In Hoyer’s mind, the Patriots “100 percent made the right decision” to start Brissett, by the way.)

But if there’s one thing Hoyer says he wants fans to take away from the show, it’s the human side of football and the importance of the camaraderie built between teammates – something he calls the secret ingredient of the Patriots’ dynastic runs and shines through in his bond with his co-host.

“The best teams that I was on, which obviously were pretty much all of the Patriot teams, the culture was run by the players, and that gets back to relationships,” said the veteran quarterback. “When I had this opportunity to do [the show] with someone that I really, enjoy being and spending time with, I was like, ‘Man, this is gonna be awesome.’”

“Brian is the perfect co-host,” Andrews added. “Our relationship goes way back to our playing days as teammates. Not many people I’ve been around see and understand the game of football better than ‘Hoy.’”
