Here’s how much work Drake Maye is reportedly getting in Patriots practice

The rookie quarterback is participating in 30 percent of the Patriots' first-team reps during practice, according to CBS Sports' Evan Washburn.

Drake Maye is getting plenty of work in during practice: When Jerod Mayo announced that Jacoby Brissett would be the Patriots’ starting quarterback over Drake Maye, the head coach said that the rookie would get plenty of work in practice.

That appears to be the case through the first week of the regular season. Maye took 30 percent of the first-team reps during practice ahead of the Patriots’ Week 1 win over the Bengals, CBS Sports’ Evan Washburn recently reported.

“For those that don’t know, a backup in a normal NFL situation, if they get five-to-10 percent of the first team reps, that would be a lot,” Washburn, who was sideline reporter for the Patriots-Bengals game, said on CBS Sports Network. “Those are valued extremely high by the starter. I mean, you go back to the Tom Brady days, the backup ain’t getting any reps. So that tells you how much they’re investing in what Drake Maye’s getting out of this year even though at the moment, he’s not the starter.”

In addition to getting reps with the first team during practice, Maye has been getting work in with the scout team as well. However, Maye isn’t just being used for show on the scout team to help the Patriots’ starting defensive unit get prepared for their upcoming opponent, according to Washburn.

‘When he’s running the scout team he’s not getting a heads up of what he’s going to face,” explained Washburn. “So it’s not a situation where he’s there just to help out the first-team defense, they wanna use that as live game reps for Drake Maye to face what appears to be, after what we saw in Cincinnati, a top-tier defense in New England.”

When the Patriots opened training camp in July, it was widely expected that Brissett would open the season as the team’s starting quarterback. But Maye had impressive performances during the preseason, throwing for 192 yards and a touchdown to go with 32 rushing yards and a score. Maye’s performance was actually strong enough that Mayo said the rookie outplayed Brissett in the final weeks of camp and in the preseason.

Mayo hasn’t committed to playing Maye at all this season. The number of snaps the third-overall pick has received in practice though could be a sign that he’s on the field sooner rather than later.

“If you wanna play the odds here, Drake Maye will, at some point, play for the Patriots this season,” Washburn. “You hope it’s not from an injury to Brissett, but this is just kind of the way it goes with these top picks.”

Trivia: How many rookie quarterbacks have started a game for the Patriots in the regular season? (Hint: Drew Bledsoe became the sixth rookie quarterback to start a game in Patriots history during the 1993 season.)

    Scores and schedules:

The Red Sox fell to the Yankees 2-1 on Thursday, losing in the 10th inning when Juan Soto knocked in the game-winning run. With Thursday’s defeat, the Red Sox fell 4.5 games back of the Twins for the final wild card spot in the American League. Boston will take on New York for the second game of a four-game set on Friday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

This weekend, 24th-ranked Boston College will travel to take on sixth-ranked Missouri. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Later on Saturday, the Revolution head to Florida to take on Orlando City SC at 7:30 p.m.

Finally, the Patriots have their home opener on Sunday. They host the Seahawks at 1 p.m.

How Jerod Mayo prepares for a game: In the upcoming episode of “Patriots All Access,” the new Patriots coach broke down the process of how he and the team gets ready for each gameday. Mayo shared that the team doesn’t have a dress code anymore for traveling, allowing sweatsuits on flights. As for home games, Mayo wants the team to do as much preparation as they can at Gillette Stadium before they head over to the team’s hotel for the evening.

The Larry O’Brien Trophy made a stop in the Dominican Republic: Celtics star Al Horford brought the Larry O’Brien Trophy to his native Dominican Republic this week. Horford, who is the first player from the Dominican Republic to win an NBA title, brought the trophy to National Palace, where he received the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez, and Mella.

On this day: In 2020, the Patriots played the first game of the post-Tom Brady era. The season-opening matchup with the Dolphins marked one of the few high points for the Patriots that year, with New England winning 21-11. Cam Newton had one of his best games in his lone regular season in New England, completing 15 of 19 passes for 155 yards while rushing for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

Brady also played his first game with the Buccaneers that day. He threw two interceptions in a 34-23 loss to the Saints. Brady ultimately got the last laugh of that season though, leading Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl win to notch the seventh title of his career.

Trivia answer: Nine (Tom Sherman, Jim Plunkett, Steve Grogan, Tony Eason, Tommy Hodson, Drew Bledsoe, Jacoby Brissett, Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe)
