October is just around the corner, which means that tourism in Salem is about to skyrocket. Tourist season has become overwhelming for residents and business owners around the city, even resulting in a 3,400% increase in tour guide license fees. With that said, there are countless iconic sights, like filming locations for ‘Hocus Pocus’, Haunted Happenings, and the sites of the Salem Witch Trials. How can we all enjoy the iconic coastal city while leaving space for the residents?

“A smile goes a long way — our small businesses are working hard, and kindness is truly appreciated!” wrote Lee from Salem in our survey last year. “They put out these great informational messages about taking the T or taking the ferry… if you drive here there will be no parking, but it’s that human nature thing of, ‘Oh, that won’t happen to me,’” Matthew Phillion, Salem local, said as well.

Local residents, what are your tips for visitors heading to Salem this fall? What do tourists need to keep in mind as they navigate and share space with those who live there?

Fill out the survey below or send an e-mail to [email protected], and your response may appear in an upcoming Boston.com article.
