John Kerry’s former campaign adviser arrested on Nantucket on fugitive from justice warrant

Daniel Burrell was arraigned in Nantucket District Court Friday on a fugitive from justice court warrant, according to court records.

A former senior adviser to John Kerry’s presidential campaign was arrested Friday on Nantucket on a warrant out of Las Vegas following the sale of his foreclosed mansion on the island, multiple outlets reported.

Daniel Burrell was arraigned in Nantucket District Court Friday on a fugitive from justice court warrant, according to court records. He was ordered to be committed to Barnstable County Correctional Facility after not posting bail, which was set at $10,000 cash.

Burrell, a businessman in private equity and previous contributor at the Huffington Post, worked in the Domestic Policy Council in the Clinton Administration in 2000 to 2001, according to his HuffPost biography. He advised on Kerry’s 2002 Senate run and 2004 presidential campaign.

The Nantucket Current reported that authorities in Nevada were looking for Burrell after he allegedly wrote a bad check to a casino for $1.5 million in Las Vegas. In Colorado, he was previously sought after allegedly defaulting on more than $75 million in bank loans he used for divorce payments, a yacht, and luxury homes, the Current reported.

His Nantucket home on Brewster Road was built in 2015 and sold at a public auction on Thursday for $12,525,000, the Current reported.

The Denver Post reported that Burrell has been sued by multiple banks in the past year over his financial situation. Alpine Bank said earlier this year that Burrell owed $18 million on an $18.5 million loan, and First Western sued him months earlier over a $56 million loan collateralized on more luxury homes.

Burrell is also being sued by U.S. Bank over a $3.5 million loan, the Post reported.

After serving with Kerry — who the Current described as Burrell’s friend — the Yale-educated businessman went on to be the CEO of Rosemont Realty until 2013, a firm tied up with claims involving President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden. According to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, the funds weren’t connected with Hunter.

Burrell was ordered held at the Nantucket Police Department Friday until he posted bail or could be transported to Barnstable House of Correction. His next court appearance is in November.
