Mac Jones had a disastrous debut in Jaguars’ blowout loss to Bills Monday

Mac Jones’ honeymoon phase with his hometown Jaguars came to a crashing end in Buffalo.

The former Patriots QB made his debut in regular-season action with the Jags on Monday night, with Jones entering in the game in place of Trevor Lawrence for the closing minutes of an eventual 47-10 blowout loss to the Bills.

While Lawrence (21-of-38, 178 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) labored throughout the night in Buffalo, Jones didn’t fare much better when pressed into action.

On just his third play of the night, Jones was strip-sacked by Javon Solomon while dropping back to pass — with Buffalo’s Casey Toohill scooping up the ball on the Jaguars’ 21-yard line.

Just four plays later, Ray Davis found the end zone for the Bills — capping the scoring on the night.

Jones completed five of his eight passes for 22 yards in relief of Lawrence, although one of those incompletions was a drop from Jaguars receiver Parker Washington in the end zone during the final minute of play.

Still, it was a far from encouraging start for Jones, who was dealt from the Patriots to the Jags in March in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

While New England moved on from Jones in favor of Jacoby Brissett and rookie QB Drake Maye, Jones impressed out of the gate for Jacksonville during preseason action — completing 38 of his 52 passes for 421 yards and three touchdowns.

At one point in August, Jones looked like a far cry from the lackluster QB who threw 24 touchdowns and 23 interceptions over his final two seasons in Foxborough.

But Jones’ miscue on Monday was a familiar sight for Patriots fans who saw the signal-caller regularly cough up the ball during critical junctures of games in the past.

“Mac has played extremely well the last couple of weeks and really has bought into what we do,” Jaguars head coach Dough Pederson told reporters in August. “He’ll still revert back to his Patriot ways every now and then and we’ve got to remind him he’s in Jacksonville, but he’s done a good job.”

The Patriots could battle Jones out on the gridiron next month, as New England will take on the Jaguars in London on Oct. 20.

However, a 26-year-old QB like Jones who is just a few years removed from a Pro Bowl nod could be an appealing target before the NFL trade deadline — especially for a team in need of a signal-caller like the Dolphins.

With Tua Tagovailoa placed on injured reserve suffering another concussion in Week 2 — and backup Skylar Thompson now hampered by a rib injury — the Dolphins currently have third-string QB Tim Boyle as the top option on their roster this week.

During an appearance on PFT Live with Mike Florio last week, former Patriots safety Devin McCourty tossed out the Dolphins as a possible trade destination for Jones, given their injury woes.
