Bill Belichick has ‘no idea’ what the Patriots are doing with Drake Maye

"If Mayo says he's got a plan then I guess he's got one and we'll have to wait and see what it is."

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said Monday Jacoby Brissett is “100 percent” the starting quarterback and that New England has a development plan for rookie quarterback Drake Maye who has made just one appearance this season.

When pressed about the plan during his weekly radio interview on WEEI, Mayo said the plan is not for media members to know.

Former Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who now has several media jobs, was asked for his thoughts on how Mayo is handling the quarterback situation and what kinds of conversations Mayo should be having about it.

“I’ll be honest with you: I have no idea what the plan is,” Belichick said Monday on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show. “So I don’t know. I can’t comment on that. If Mayo says he’s got a plan then I guess he’s got one and we’ll have to wait and see what it is.”

The Patriots have not said when they plan to make Maye the starter. He appeared in the closing minutes of New England’s 24-3 loss to the Jets on Thursday Night Football in Week 3, but hasn’t been seen on the field during regular-season games before or since.

New England offense is ranked dead last in passing yards per game (112.3) and second-to-last in points per game (13) under Brissett while Maye sits on the bench.

Mayo acknowledged that the decision to keep Maye on the bench while the offense struggles can be frustrating for fans and media who follow the team.

Belichick, who coached the Patriots for 24 years, offered his take on the general state of the team following Sunday’s 30-13 loss at San Francisco.

“I’d say there’s a number of issues there,” Belichick said. “One is, you can’t move the ball and can’t score. Got 63-yard field goal or whatever it was and then got a touchdown off a fumbled kickoff but otherwise had a hard time moving the ball.”

“I don’t know exactly what the numbers were but the amount of time that Purdy had to throw was pretty high. I’ve got to think that in terms of the amount of time before the ball was released, it had to be the highest in the league or close to it. I think there were some pass-rush issues there, some scoring issues.”

There was a silver lining in the loss, Belichick said. Joey Slye broke the franchise record with a 63-yard field goal in the second quarter, showing why he beat out Chad Ryland for the job.

“That was a great addition for them,” Belichick said. “They’ve got a great kicker and that’s a big upgrade from where we were last year, but I’d say there are some things that have to be worked out and obviously they got the protection straightened out that cost them the game against Seattle on the blocked field goal.

“But, we’ll see. We’ll see what the plan is. I have no idea what it is.”
