Local band releases song honoring former Red Sox announcer Joe Castiglione

"Castiglione (Acoustic Demo)" is now available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

Brian Scully, lead vocalist of the band Dalton & the Sheriffs, wrote and released a song to honor longtime Red Sox broadcaster Joe Castiglione.

Fittingly titled “Castiglione,” the ode essentially thanks the announcer for his 42 years of providing play analysis and commentary. Scully released the acoustic demo last Friday, with little time to add more production (Castiglione retired after the Red Sox’ last game of the 2024 season on Sunday).

“It’s a demo but I feel like the bones of what I was trying to do are there,” Scully told MassLive. “It’s not very well-recorded, but I like the song a lot.”

With lyrics like “Turn it up, roll the windows down / Take me home Castiglione,” the song tells a story of driving and listening to a game, as Scully often did as a child and now continues to do with his own kids.

“It’s been the soundtrack to my drives,” he said. “When you’re in a band, all you do is drive. It was like having a friend with you on those late nights or on your way to gigs.”

Castiglione was the voice of many memorable Red Sox moments on the radio from the time he joined the booth in 1983 through his final game on Sunday. He called the final out in three of the Red Sox’ last four World Series wins. He also called the final out for three of their AL pennant wins since 2004, having several memorable calls in the Red Sox’ defeat of the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS.

Scully is just one of the few members of Dalton & the Sheriffs, a country band that originated in Scituate.
