Which issues do you want the presidential candidates to be prioritizing as they compete for your vote?

With less than a month left until the 2024 presidential election, many voters are likely thinking deeply about which candidate they’ll cast their ballot for – about who aligns with the issues they care about most.

Presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have both included the economy, immigration, gun policy, and more among their top concerns, according to their campaign websites.

What national issues do you care about most? Which issues do you want the presidential candidates to be prioritizing as they compete for your vote?

Below, we break down where Harris and Trump stand on some top national issues, and ask you to weigh in on which you are most concerned about.

Economy

According to Harris’s website, “building up the middle class will be a defining goal of her presidency. That’s why she will make it a top priority to bring down costs and increase economic security for all Americans.”

Trump’s plan for America’s economy is “lower taxes, bigger paychecks, and more jobs for American workers,” his website says.

Reproductive rights

Harris’s website states “she will never allow a national abortion ban to become law. And when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom nationwide, she will sign it.”

Trump called the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade “the biggest win for life in a generation.” His website says he “will continue to nominate highly qualified prosecutors, judges, and justices who believe in enforcing the law, not their own political agenda.”

Climate change

Harris said she will tackle the climate crisis by advancing environmental justice, protecting public lands and public health, increasing resilience to climate disasters, lowering household energy costs, creating millions of new jobs, and holding polluters accountable to secure clean air and water for all.

Trump’s website does not address climate change. Instead, his energy plans include bringing down the cost of gasoline, diesel and natural gas, promoting energy security globally, eliminating what he calls “the socialist Green New Deal” and “ensuring the United States is never again at the mercy of a foreign supplier of energy.”

Immigration

Harris’s immigration plans include bringing back the bipartisan border security bill and signing it into law. On her website, she said she acknowledges “that our immigration system is broken and needs comprehensive reform that includes strong border security and an earned pathway to citizenship.”

Trump’s website says he will “shut down the Harris-Biden Administration’s border disaster,” end catch-and-release, restore Remain in Mexico, and eliminate asylum fraud.

Gun policy

Harris said she will address gun violence by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, requiring universal background checks, and supporting red flag laws.

Trump’s website says he will “always defend your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.” Further, he says he will “deliver record funding to hire and retrain police officers, strengthen qualified immunity and other protections for police officers, increase penalties for assaults on law enforcement, put violent offenders and career criminals behind bars, and surge federal prosecutors and the National Guard into high-crime communities.”
