Drake Maye lands on Patriots injury report, reportedly went for MRI

Drake Maye is still feeling some of the bumps and bruises from his first NFL start last Sunday.

The Patriots QB was listed on the team’s injury report with a knee injury on Wednesday. But the third-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft was still listed as a full participant during practice at Gillette Stadium and held his usual media availability earlier that morning.

However, Ben Volin of The Boston Globe noted on X Wednesday evening that Maye went for an MRI after practice. Maye’s status is something worth monitoring for the rest of the week, as the Patriots will fly out to London on Thursday evening before taking on the Jaguars Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Maye was sacked four times and was hit another eight times during last Sunday’s 41-21 loss to the Texans. He was slow to get up on two of those sacks from Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, but did not miss any snaps at Gillette Stadium.

“I feel all right. I think you’re playing quarterback in the NFL, you’re going to be sore the next day,” Maye said postgame after Sunday’s loss to Houston. “That’s part of it. Probably can do a better job of getting down or throwing it away. I think I took a couple sacks today — maybe where I could have thrown it away or thrown check-downs instead of getting a sack.”

Any potential lingering injury for Maye would be a devastating step back for a Patriots offense that showed some signs of life with the rookie QB under center last week. New England posted a season-best 21 points against the Texans, with Maye throwing for three touchdowns and generating 281 total yards in the loss.

Even with Maye listed as a full participant during Wednesday’s practice, there were several other key members of New England’s roster who were not given the green light to practice.

Running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who missed New England’s game against Houston with a foot injury, did not practice on Wednesday due to that same ailment.

The versatile back’s absence was felt against the Texans. Maye was New England’s leading rusher against Houston with just 38 yards. Antonio Gibson only averaged 1.5 yards per carry as New England’s lead back.

Beyond Stevenson, left tackle Vederian Lowe and cornerback Marcus Jones also did not practice on Wednesday.

Here is New England’s full injury report:

    DID NOT PARTICIPATE

CB Marcus Jones, Groin / Illness

    T Vederian Lowe, Ankle

Playing for the 1st lick overall in the draft now. Mayo did not get enough offensive line talent before the season started and we all knew that. Of course this was going to happen. Things start with O and D lineman dominating then your QB will flourish easier

They bring in their star quarterback with great potential and they can't even protect the guy . This season is already over I say get rid of Mayo too .
