David Ortiz still loves watching the Red Sox’ historic comeback vs. the Yankees 20 years later, especially alongside Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter

On the 20th anniversary of the Red Sox’ 2004 American League Championship Series Game 4 victory, which sparked a historic comeback down 3-0 in the series, David Ortiz couldn’t help but bask in the highlights from that game.

Ortiz, who’s an analyst for MLB on FOX alongside former Yankees Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, was at the television desk following Game 4 of this year’s NLCS between the Mets and Dodgers on Thursday night. Thursday marked two decades since Dave Roberts stole second base and eventually scored in the ninth inning and Ortiz hit a walk-off home run in extra innings.

Everything that happened afterward is history.

Naturally, FOX showed some clips from that fateful night at Fenway Park. Once Ortiz realized what was being shown on the screen, he blurted out his signature phrase:

“Theeeee Yankees lose!” Ortiz exclaimed while beaming and laughing. He was looking at Jeter as he said it, who was sitting next to him.

Ortiz first coined the phrase in 2017 after New York lost Game 7 of the 2017 ALCS to the Houston Astros. The legendary Red Sox slugger is poking fun at former Yankees radio voice John Sterling, who would say “Theeeee Yankees win!” after exciting victories.

Since Ortiz re-mixed the saying seven years ago, he’s often heard saying it on FOX after New York playoff losses. The phrase served as a double whammy for Ortiz on Thursday: not only was it the 20-year mark since the beginning of Boston’s historic ALCS comeback, but the Yankees also lost to the Guardians in the clubs’ ALCS Game 3 via a walk-off homer that night.

Rodriguez seems to be able to joke about his team’s disastrous blown series after two decades. He can be seen laughing in response to Ortiz’s belly laughs, and said that he has seen highlights from that game “100” times since joining MLB on FOX.

Jeter, on the other hand, is eventually seen with a smile on his face (perhaps a forced smile), but he initially pretends to not know what everyone else is talking about, perhaps in hopes the subject will change and he won’t have to relive the contest.

Entering Friday, New York is up two games to one on Cleveland in this year’s ALCS. If the Yankees continue to lose, Rodriguez and Jeter may never hear the end of it from Ortiz on FOX.

If New York advances to the World Series, Ortiz will certainly be wishing for a Yankees failure. The Fall Classic will be broadcast on FOX featuring pre- and post-game coverage from Ortiz, Rodriguez, and Jeter, which will make for entertaining television in the event New York loses.
