BOSTON ( WBZ NewsRadio ) — Thousands packed Cruiseport Boston to get a jump start on the Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration.

Roughly 5,000 people gathered on Sunday for the 35 th Annual Tết in Boston . The Vietnamese Lunar New Year, Tết Nguyên Đán, is on Feb. 10, celebrating the Year of the Dragon.

Executive Director of the festival Sunny Nguyen was excited to kick off the festivities that featured lots of entertainment.

“We bring in martial artists, specifically Vovinam which is a Vietnamese-based martial art, as well as a bunch of Lion dance performers. We have fashion dance, which we showcase our áo dài and different traditional Vietnamese dress,” said Nguyen.

There were also dozens of food vendors selling traditional Vietnamese food, like a spicy vegetarian soup called Bún.

Mayor Michelle Wu was at the event passing out lucky money in red envelopes and taking pictures with many of those at the festival, something she does not take for granted.

“I grew up sometimes feeling quite disconnected from belonging in the community,” said Wu.

    WBZ's Suzanne Sausville ( @WBZSausville ) reports.
