Red Sox prospect Brainer Bonaci has reportedly been suspended for the 2024 season for a violation of a minor league’s domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy.

Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reported Bonaci’s suspension on Wednesday evening, citing an industry source.

No further information has been made available about the nature of Bonaci’s violation.

Bonaci, 21, had been placed on MLB’s restricted list since October — which prompted his removal from the Arizona Fall League.

The infield prospect split the 2023 season between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland, hitting .297/.354/.464 with 11 home runs and seven stolen bases in 79 games. During Baseball America’s mid-season rankings, Bonaci was tabbed as the No. 11 prospect in Boston’s farm system.

But after 16 games with Portland, Bonaci was placed on the reserve list in late August and sent home to Venezuela, with Speier citing a league source who at the time tabbed it as “administrative leave.”

Bonaci was later taken off the reserve list after the 2023 minor-league season ended and was allowed to take part in the Arizona Fall League — but only played two total games with the Glendale Desert Dogs before being placed on the restricted list by MLB.
