You could squeeze into the St. Patrick's Day parade route or pay a $20 cover to a bar — or you could skip the parade entirely and celebrate at one of these spots.

Joe's on Newbury is kicking off the festivities on Thursday with live music by Brother Seamus.

    • Like most restaurants, Joe's is serving themed whiskey cocktails and special entrees, including a Guinness beef stew.

It wouldn't be St. Patrick's Day without a Dropkick Murphys concert , or several.

    • The band first performs Thursday at 6pm at the House of Blues.
    • The band also plays Friday and Sunday at MGM Music Hall at Fenway.

Aeronaut Brewing Company hosts live music all weekend at its Somerville taproom.

    • Irish band Gwen Johnston & Friends will play Saturday, 2:30pm-5:30pm.
    • Forfocséic, a Celtic punk act, will play Sunday, 3pm-6pm.

The Sugar Factory hosts a Lucky Charms pop-up with nearly two dozen food and drink specials.

    • Yes, that includes a shamrock milkshake.

For the runners, there's the St. Pats Fun Run in Somerville, starting at 11:30am.

    • After the 5K race, Remnant Brewing and Saus will host a courtyard party with music, face painting, food and brews.
    • Price: $30. Ticket covers a water bottle, first beer and a baked potato from Saus with vegan or vegetarian options.

The Charles River Speedway hosts a free "bar crawl" 12pm to 7pm with food and drink specials and bingo with prizes.

    • No RSVP required.

For a family-friendly option, the Wenham Museum has a scavenger hunt on Saturday and Sunday.

    • Price: $10. Another $3 for a binoculars "craft kit."
    • First come, first served.
