"The smell of weed has made its way to the top of the TD Garden" - Hilarious news of Boston Celtics' championship celebration makes rounds

Boston Celtics fans know how to party and have every reason to do so. After a long wait, they are finally NBA champions. Also, the city's major sports team with the longest title drought isn't the Celtics anymore. That distinction now belongs to the Boston Bruins, who last secured a championship in 2011.

The Celtics won the Larry O'Brien Trophy on Monday, dominating the Dallas Mavericks. Not long after the game, Sam Amick of The Athletic noted the "smell of weed" making its way to the media room.

Getting high on the Celtics' championship ride

While legal and recreational marijuana is allowed in Beantown, drugs like medical marijuana are strictly prohibited at TD Garden. So, it's unclear if the arena will try to look for the perpetrator if Amick's tweet is substantiated.

However, it's more likely that the building's security will let it go because the championship has been a long time coming for the franchise.

After clinching the 2008 title behind the Big 3 of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen, the Celtics returned to the Finals twice before this year. The team had also reached seven Eastern Conference Finals but always fell short of the ultimate goal.

But now, with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum leading the way, Boston is once again an NBA champion. It's the franchise's 18th title, pulling them one ahead of its bitter rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers. Hilariously, though, some Lakers fans have noted that the organization actually has 18 banners in the rafters because of its In-Season Tournament title.

The Celtics' outlook beyond this season

Only time will tell if the Celts can add more trophies to their collection starting next season. With a core of Tatum, Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White locked up for at least until the end of the 2024-25 campaign, it wouldn't be surprising to see them make JT's prophecy of doing it again next year come true.

The front office might have to be wily with how it reinforces its roster, though, as the team is already above the second apron. Without much financial flexibility, the C's can only hope that health issues won't arise next season, especially since Tatum and Holiday are set to play for Team USA in the Olympics. Meanwhile, White is a potential replacement for Kawhi Leonard in the Paris Games.

The good news is that with Boston expected to be a title favorite again in the 2024-25 campaign, veteran free agents chasing a ring could be lining up to join in the offseason. Perhaps TD Garden should anticipate seeing confetti fall from the rafters and smelling weed rise to the top of the arena around this time next year.
