Jayson Tatum Question Exposes Celtics Fans' Basketball Knowledge

During his short college career, Jayson Tatum only played one season with the Duke Blue Devils. Still, it shouldn’t be so obscure detail that basketball fans wouldn’t even know where he played before turning pro - especially if the fans we’re talking about here are Boston Celtics diehards.

But that was the case among several Celtics fans who failed to answer a simple question about Tatum’s background.

After the Celtics won the NBA title by beating the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals, some Boston supporters were asked where Tatum went to college, and many of them had no idea what the correct answer was.

Tatum played for the Blue Devils in the 2016–17 season under college basketball titan Mike Krzyzewski. In Durham, Tatum averaged 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.3 steals across 29 games. He was teammates with Luke Kennard, Grayson Allen, Amile Jefferson, and Harry Giles.

After his stint with Duke, Tatum was selected third overall by the Celtics in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Tatum is the eighth Blue Devil to win an NBA championship as a player. Before Tatum, the last Duke product to win a Larry O’Brien Trophy was another Tatum college teammate, Jack White, who won a ring with the Denver Nuggets in 2023.
