Terror in Boston: Enormous fire engulfs historic building as Theater District goes up in flames

A four-alarm fire caused serious damage to a historic building in Boston ’s Theater District last night.

The building was a landmark in the area, and was at one point, Boston’s second oldest operating restaurant. The Jacob Wirth building was a German American restaurant, founded in 1868. It had not been operating as a restaurant since 2018.

According to the Boston Fire Department, the blaze spread across all four floors, causing severe damage. The department carried out an “aggressive attack” on the fire from all directions, pouring water from above and below. However, they struggled to contain it.

Deputy Chief Michael Hocking said that there were no injuries to report from the blaze. However, the severe damages have been estimated at $3 million. The intense heat also melted the light pole globe and damaged 2 cars that were across the street.

The Jacob Wirth restaurant was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It had not been operating as a restaurant since 2018, but there were talks of opening a new beer hall in the space.
