The Bruins Botched The Linus Ullmark Trade

Don Sweeney is an idiot. That’s already been established . I don’t think I need to bury the lede here but the Linus Ullmark trade is absolutely horrendous for the Bruins and makes zero sense for a number of reasons. No need to add in a bunch of fluff here. This was an embarrassing deal for the Bruins.

A: This is the most important part of the deal. Jeremy Swayman now has all the leverage in contract talks. They gave up Ullmark and put all the leverage on Swayman. They have now told him he’s the guy. Good luck getting him extended for a reasonable contract.

B: The Senators were desperate to get rid of Joonas Korpisalo. All indications where that they were going to buy him out. In reality, the first round pick Ottawa gave up should have been to just dump the contract. The Sens killed two birds with one stone. They get off Korpisalo and replace him with a huge upgrade they didn’t even have to pay for.

C: What did the Bruins really get here? Pick 25 and a 4th liner? All to save $2 million in cap space for a far worse player? Keep in mind, the Bruins didn’t have a first round pick so now they have one, not two. They should have gotten a first round pick just to take on Korpisalo, who the Sens were planning on buying out. The idea that they handed over Ullmark for free just to clear $2 million in cap space is indefensible.

This is a terrible trade for the Bruins and I’m not sure how it’s even arguable. Does anybody even have a defense for it?
