Alex Cora Wants The Red Sox To Make Some Moves
The MLB’s trade deadline is rapidly approaching. Teams have just over a month until the July 30th cutoff hits. This is baseball’s crunch time. Teams on the edge must decide if they’re going to become sellers, and try again next year, or become buyers and go for gold. Alex Cora wants the Boston Red Sox to be buyers.
Alex Cora vocalized his desires when speaking with the media about the approaching deadline. He told the assembled reporters that he wants the Red Sox to “get greedy”, and that he doesn’t want the team to “settle” for a low Wild Card position.
The Boston Red Sox are in a position to justify some big moves. After a sluggish start to their season, the Sox are surging. They’ve won 10 of their last 13 games. Only two weeks ago, they were 13 games out of first. They now sit 8.5 games back, and their 43-37 record is good enough for that wild card spot Alex Cora wants to bypass. A little more help could go a very long way. The main obstacle in this objective is going to be ownership.
John Henry has earned a reputation as an owner who doesn’t seem very committed to success. Despite spending next to nothing and and making no major moves during the offseason, he still believes the Red Sox are “ underperforming “. Henry and Cora have had disagreements already this season. Henry has told Red Sox fans to relax their expectations for the team, something Cora rejects.
“I think every fanbase has the right to dream big…I like John [Henry], he’s been amazing to me, there’s certain things that we agree on, there’s certain things that we don’t agree on.”
As Boston’s season begins to heat up, so will the outside pressure on them to do something. Ken Rosenthal believes the Red Sox are “obligated” to make some moves. They certainly have the pieces to pull something off. The case is laid out in our own Buyers or Sellers series. If John Henry decides to stay cheap, there are a myriad of cost efficient options available. The Red Sox do retain some larger pieces as well. Kenley Jansen , despite being past his prime, is still a piece that will garner immediate interest from teams serious about making a deal. Perhaps the additional weight of Alex Cora’s own statements will light the fire under John Henry that Boston fans have been praying for.
