SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is alerting residents of a recent case of measles in the state.

Increase in COVID-19 cases expected this summer

An international visitor who traveled through Boston to Amsterdam on public transportation on June 22nd was diagnosed with measles. The traveler was in public locations which could mean that others were exposed to the airborne disease. Here are some reported areas the visitor reported being in:

    • 11:40 a.m. – Dartmouth coach bus line departure from Hanover, NH
    • Dartmouth College to Boston arriving at Logan Airport in Boston at approximately 2:40 p.m.
    • 2:40 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. – Terminal E at Logan Airport, Boston
    • Flight KLM6016 from Boston to Amsterdam departing from Gate E5

According to the Massachusetts DPH, measles are more contagious than any other disease. There has been an increase in cases and outbreaks worldwide and those who are not vaccinated are at high risk of infection.

Health officials say the best way to protect yourself from measles is by getting at least one dose of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine. Early symptoms of measles are expected 10 days to two weeks after exposure. Those symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash.

The DPH is also contacting those who may have been exposed to measles by the traveler.
