Jayson Tatum receives $315 million supermax extension from Celtics

Reports this afternoon confirm that superstar Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics are in agreement on a $315 million supermax contract extension. Taytum, 26, will potentially remain in Boston for the next five seasons, should he decide not to engage the player option included in the extension.

Things could not be looking any brighter for Jayson Tatum at this moment. Let’s review some of this season’s accomplishments:

• Lead the Celtics to their league-leading 18th title
• Averaged 25+ PPG, 4+ AST and 7+ REB for the fourth season in a row
• Selected for fifth consecutive All-Star Game
• Selected for second consecutive first-team All-NBA

The Celtics are embracing the spend-to-win mentality, and so far, it’s paying off. They signed Jaylen Brown to a $286 million supermax last season (the largest contract in NBA history until Tatum’s). Just today, they extended Derrick White to the tune of $125.9 million. Kristaps Porzingis signed on for two more years and $60 million last July. Jrue Holiday will remain in Boston until 2028 in exchange for $135 million. Their payroll next season is expected to exceed an eye watering $400 million . It’s hard to argue that it hasn’t been or won’t be worth it.

I simply could not imagine a better scenario for the Boston Celtics right now. They dominated the entire regular and post season. They suffered only three losses throughout the entire playoffs. They have a perfect mix of young and veteran talent. All of their stars and key players are locked down on lucrative, multi-year contracts, so they’re locked in to run it back. They own the NBA title record. For Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics, the sky is the limit, and they’re aiming for it.
