Many people believe Jayson Tatum was upset that he did not win the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, despite the fact he led the Boston Celtics to their first championship victory in 16 years and league-leading 18th title. If he is frustrated, he can now wipe his tears with the largest contract in NBA history after his recent extension with the storied franchise.

Shams Charania, the voice of The Athletic , reported on Monday (July 1) that the superstar forward was finalizing a contract extension that would yield him five more years in Boston for a record $314 million. Coincidentally, this deal overtakes his teammate and NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown’s previous deal, which amounted to $285 million.

Tatum was a force for the Celtics, despite being highly scrutinized. He averaged 25 points, just under 10 rebounds, and six assists in their dominant 19-game stretch during the 2024 playoffs. The Celtics were under a lot of pressure this season due to adding Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday to their already talented roster, on top of several successful seasons that did not end in a ring. They finally got the job done this year, taking down the Dallas Mavericks in convincing fashion in five games.

Jayson Tatum can now say he ended this season with his first NBA Championship, a record-setting deal, his third straight First Team All-NBA selection, and his fifth straight All-Star selection–all of which he accomplished at the age of 26.

The Boston Celtics also ensured that they will have a roster equipped to win the first back-to-back NBA championships since the Golden State Warriors did so in 2017 and 2018. They kept their core intact by signing guard Derrick White to a four-year, $125.9 million deal.

Kristaps Porzingis will make $30 million per year through the 2025-2026 season, Jrue Holiday will make $33.6 million per year through the 2027-2028 season, and Al Horford will make $9.5 million next season before the team considers his playing future, as he will be 39 when his deal expires. Even without Horford, this Celtics team is looking like they will be a thorn in all NBA teams’ sides for years to come.
