Should fans be upset with Wyc Grousbeck for selling Celtics?

If you want to see how accurate the adage of ‘winning changes everything’ is, look no further than Celtics majority owner and governor Wyc Grousbeck. Less than two months ago, when Grousbeck appeared on Paul Pierce’s eponymous podcast, The Truth Lounge, he balked at the idea of hypothetical multi-billion dollar offers to take the Celtics off his hands.

“Paul, I’m sorry, it’s not for sale,” he said.

With a second championship ring secured, Grousbeck’s mind seems to have changed completely. He announced Monday afternoon that he’d be selling his controlling stake in the franchise, which Forbes estimates is worth $4 billion.

Should Celtics fans be mad about this sudden about-face? Courtney Cox of WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show thinks so. Listen to the full segment above.

“Nobody thought that this was coming,” Cox said. “In the beginning he said he wants to be paid in parades. He has been the best owner that we have seen in the last five years when it comes to this town. But to say that there’s still work to be done, that they want all of the parades, that they want all the championships, and now to put the team up for sale…”

Cox then went a step further, comparing the extreme hate that former Celtic Kyrie Irving has faced for saying he would re-sign with Boston to Grousbeck changing his mind on owning the team.

“We came at Kyrie pretty hard for telling us one thing and doing something else,” Cox said.

Hill came back at this idea, asking what Grousbeck had done to make her upset.

“He didn’t do anything to me,” Cox said. “He promised me that there was going to be a ton more parades. Wiggy asked the question while he was on the show, ‘You said that you wanted to be paid in parades, is this going to turn into a dynasty?’ And he was basically saying, yeah, this is going to be more, more, more.”

Still, Hill believed that Celtics fans have no reason to be upset at Grousbeck for selling, maintaining that he was the best owner in town given that he fulfilled his promise to spend and win championships in Boston.

“We spend hours and hours and hours around this place and around this city making fun of owners who don’t spend their money and are not willing to, when it comes to a luxury tax, are not willing to write a check,” Hill said. “You get a guy who is willing to do that and has been willing to do that since they bought the team and named their LLC Banner 17 because they wanted to win Banner 17, they did, he does it again, and it’s like, ‘He owes more, actually.’”
