Red Sox manager Alex Cora seems to walk back trade deadline comments

With less than a month until the MLB trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox are still unsure if they'll be buying, selling or staying.

While last week it felt like Red Sox manager Alex Cora was pushing for his organization to make some moves to put them in a better position for a playoff run, he's now clarifying his comments.

“We’re not winning games to put pressure on the front office. We’re trying to win games to make it to the playoffs,” Cora said this week (via. MassLive ). “There’s this idea that we have to put pressure on them. No... we want to win because we want to win. Whatever happens in three weeks or a month is gonna happen. Our goal is to win each series, to win every game. That hasn’t changed. It just happens that now people are going to start talking about it because it’s July.”

Boston has been one of the best teams in baseball over the last month or so, and they now sit with a 46-39 record just a half-game out of a wild-card spot.

“I think people took it the wrong way like I was putting pressure on somebody else,” Cora said. “Nope. I’m trying to get this group to understand we’re good enough to be better. We showed it in the month of June and, hopefully, we can do it in July.

“The greedy part is challenging this group to keep going. Like, ‘Don’t settle because we’re in the hunt for a playoff spot.’ No. Just keep pushing, keep pushing. If we do it as a group, you’ll never know what can happen.”

The Red Sox should be getting greedy in terms of adding players. They have performed better than anyone expected despite all of the injuries this year, and another piece could help.

No, they don't have to sell the future for a rental, but if there's a player with term left on their deal that could help now and in the next few years, Boston should absolutely consider it.
