BOSTON (WPRI) — Starting on Friday, the Sumner Tunnel will be closed until Aug. 5 as part of the $160 million Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project.

The closure was originally scheduled to take two months, but the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced last week that the closure would be shorter than planned.

Last summer, the tunnel was closed while crews replaced the ceiling, repaired the walls, installed new lights and upgraded fire alarm systems, among other improvements. This year, MassDOT says crews will primarily be focused on demolishing and replacing the roadway in the tunnel.

MassDOT is offering a variety of alternate travel options to lessen the impacts of the tunnel’s closure including offering a 25% discount for the Logan Express when you buy tickets online and letting children 17 and under ride for free.

There will be additional parking at the Braintree Logan Express lot as well.

The Blue Line will be free to riders in both directions, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is adding an additional train to the route.

Fares at MBTA parking lots and garages on the Blue Line, in Salem and Swampscott will be reduced to $2.00 a day. Parking will be free at lots north of Salem, including in Beverly and Gloucester.

Riding the East Boston Ferry will also be free during the tunnel’s closure. Fares to ride the Lynn Ferry will be reduced to $2.40 and parking for the ferry will be free. The Winthrop Ferry will also now stop at Logan Airport.

Passengers who take water transportation to the airport will be provided with a “Ticket to Skip,” allowing them to cut to the front of the line for checkpoint screening. You can check the ferry schedules here .
