Red Sox steal a win in New York, take down Yankees 5-3 in extra innings

On Friday, the Boston Red Sox entered Yankee Stadium for the first of three games against the New York Yankees and earned a 5-3 win in extra innings

Boston's offense went completely silent for the first eight innings, scoring just one run, but with one on and two outs in the top of the ninth, designated hitter Masataka Yoshida hit a two-run shot to tie the game. Ceddanne Rafaela then hit another two-run home run to put the Red Sox up by two.

Starting pitcher Tanner Houck wasn't his best, as he gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks in his 3 1/3 innings of work after the rain delay. Enmanuel Valdez's error in the fourth led to the two unearned runs.

However, the bullpen was impressive behind him, with Bailey Horn and Cam Booser tossing 4 2/3 scoreless while giving up just three hits and a walk. Justin Slaten and Kenley Jansen pitched two scoreless innings to finish it out with Slaten getting the win and Jansen earning a save.

The win improves the Red Sox's record to 48-39 on the year and 28-16 away from Fenway Park. They're now nine games over .500 for the first time this year, winning five games in a row. The two teams will meet again on Saturday for the middle game of the series.
