BOSTON (WWLP) – A status hearing was held Monday for Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor , who was the lead investigator in the Karen Read case.

Karen Read’s defense team says jurors were unanimous on acquitting her of murder

Following weeks of testimony, a mistrial was declared in the murder trial of Karen Read, charged in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, in January 2022.

After the trial ended, Proctor was relieved of duty following an internal affairs investigation about potential serious misconduct during the Read case investigation. Proctor sent vulgar texts about her to his family, friends, and fellow troopers during the investigation. On July 1st, he was relieved of duty and transferred from the Norfolk DA’s office effective on July 7th.

As part of the MSP disciplinary process, a duty status hearing was held to determine if he will be retained on full duty, placed on restricted duty, suspended with pay, or suspended without pay.

Massachusetts State Police Spokesperson Tim McGuirk announced on Monday, Proctor will be suspended without pay as recommended by the board of three commissioned officers. The internal affairs investigation is ongoing to address each allegation in which the Department may pursue charges that would be adjudicated by a State Police Trial Board.
